GS LPG Rail Tank Car
10 of these wagons were
built by Commonwealth Engineering at Granville, under licence to the
Union Tank Car Co., between 1964 to 1967 and were numbered GS400 to
GS409. They were privately owned by the Gas Supply Co. Ltd of Melbourne
and painted in their retail brand name of Speed-E-Gas. As Boral had
acquired the Gas Supply Co., in 1964 a small Boral logo appeared on each
end of the tank.
These were the first
privately-owned wagons to be approved for operation on broad and
standard gauge tracks through the bogie exchange plant at Dynon. In 1974
three wagons were sent to Victoria and re-branded Heatane Gas later in
1978 a fourth wagon was re-branded Aftrans to carry Anhydrous Ammonia.
A comprehensive article by
Neil Cram appeared in the Australian Model Railway Magazine in October
1989 detailing the colourful history of these wagons.
See the table below for wagon transfer dates and
renumbering sequence.
