Ultimate   NSWGR  S Truck  and  Shunters Float

In the early part of the twentieth century, about 8000 all-steel open wagons coded ‘S’, were produced. They lived a hard life and after World War 2 they were ‘rebuilt’, which involved complete new composite wood and steel bodies on completely new welded underframes. The new S wagons produced in this post-war version, of which there were ultimately more than 10000 in traffic, reached every corner of the NSWGR system, from 1944 until the last train of four-wheelers ran in 1983. They carried all sorts of loads – machinery, sacks, drums, barrels, coiled steel rod, tractors … both uncovered and sheeted with tarpaulins. No NSWGR post-war model railway is complete without a good helping of S wagons.
