WWII many attempts were made to modernize freight shipments around the
world. The day of containerization had arrived, loading dedicated goods
for exclusive end users was the latest method of transportation.
Many sizes and configurations to match demand were introduced by
freight companies. Numerous sized containers required dedicated methods
of handling, none of which was compatible.
By
the late 1960s common dimensions were developed by The International Organization
Of Standardizations (ISO) for shipping
containers to be 20’ or 40’ in length. The width was fixed at 8’
and the height at 8’6” however this dimension varied and 8’ high
was common.
These
containers are the old AT components and have been upgraded to fit the
majority of Australian outline model trains. The range offers both
international and domestic branding and most were in use from the late
60s through until the late 70s period. Some domestic versions were still
in use well into the 1980s and up until the mid 1990s.
