In the early 1960s the
TGR commenced building the Y class locomotives at their
Inveresk Workshops. These were based upon the SAR 800 class
and Midland Railway F class, both of these class of
locomotives were built English Electric at their Rocklea plant
in Queensland.
Whilst the class only numbered
8 units in total, it took from 1961 up until 1971 to deliver
the entire class. They retained the classic English Electric
look of the 800 hp diesel model.
Found in use on both passenger
and freight trains across the state most remained in traffic
until the very late 1980s. Y7 was rebuilt in 2001 as a Driving
van for cement trains from Railton to Devonport. Y1 and Y5
were renumbered to 2150 and 2151 respectively and remained
with Tasrail until 2016.
